Neve ParitzkiIsrael's first cycling tunnel opens in Jerusalem

The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, was opened as part an extensive cycle path that circles the capital.

Inauguration of the tunnel which measures 2.1 kilometers long was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion and Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) along with hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem's rich past was the main reason for it to be the most visited tourist destination in the past. Elkin said that today aside from its historical treasures it is also home to modern-day travelers. "The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is another stage in the growth of Jerusalem as an ideal tourist destination for all kinds of travelers from Israel as well as around the world."

The ministry of Elkin, which also headed the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, said that the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels annually in all aspects of Jerusalem's tourism and in creating innovative attractions and ventures, that connect the magnificent historical history of our capital city and the future." I would like to invite cyclists everywhere to take a trip and enjoy the new, well-maintained and modern route which overlooks Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project.  נווה פריצקי Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the goal of shifting the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths in the city as well as the ones that are being constructed in its different areas. It's designed to encourage bicycling within its inhabitants, and to promote a green transportation revolution in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewer of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. The plant is located west of Sorek and is still used as an infrastructure tunnel.

Current works include road construction, installation blowers and sophisticated safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is secure for all to use during the entire year.
