The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first bike tunnel, opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle path surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban and its northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about one kilometer away close to the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

The city's rich history was a reason that it was the most visited tourist destination in the past. Elkin said that, the present, in addition to its historic treasures, the tunnel project also includes modern tourism.  נווה פריצקי "The opening of this tunnel is another aspect of the development of the city of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable city that is attractive to all types of people throughout Israel and throughout the globe."

Elkin, whose ministry was in charge of the project with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism and also in the creation of new attractions and ventures that connect the stunning historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. "The Kerem Tunnel project is a central tool for realizing the goal to transform the idea of transportation in Jerusalem," Elkin said. The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the 1990s to move the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek It is situated to the west of the city. It is used today as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

The current work includes road construction, installation blowers, and advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe for everyone to use throughout the year.
